1942 : Operation Jubilee Failed


On August 19, 1942, Canadian and British troops tried to take control of the port of Dieppe from the Germans in Operation Jubilee. Half of the soldiers involved (3600 men) died during the attempt.

1953 : Coup in Iran with the assistance of the United States


On August 19, 1953, the United States participated in a military coup to regain power from the Prime Minister Mossadeq and reinstall the Shah.
Mossadeq, Prime Minister since 1951, had enjoyed strong popular support and had decided to nationalize the Iranian oil to the chagrin of the British and Americans. When he saw that the Shah and the British and American intelligence wanted to overtrow him, Mossadeq called his supporters to demonstrate in the streets. The Shah fled the country and the British withdrew but the Americans who feared that Mossadeq was led by Moscow, staged a coup with the military loyal to the Shah. Mossadeq was arrested and the Shah returned to power until 1979. The Americans paid their misjudgment after the Revolution of 1979.

1980 : Fire kills 301 passengers on a plane in Saudi Arabia


On August 19, 1980, a fire broke out aboard a Saudi plane which had just taken off from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fire came from a butane gas stove used by passengers to cook their own food. The plane managed to return to the track but none of the passengers could escape from the burning aircraft.

2003 : Suicide attack on a bus in Jerusalem


On August 19, 2003, a Hamas suicide bomber blew himself up on a bus in Jerusalem. 23 people, including seven children were killed and 130 others were injured.

Independence Day in Afghanistan
August 19 is Independence Day in Afghanistan, which commemorates its independence guaranteed by the Treaty of Rawalpindi signed on 19 August 1919. Afghanistan was not part of the British Empire but did not control its foreign affairs. The treaty which was signed at the end of the third Anglo-Afghan war of 1919, gave this control to the Afghans and confirmed the boundaries of the territory.
