On 21 February 1916, the German army launched one of the deadliest battles, the Battle of Verdun which lasted until 19 December 1916 and killed 300,000 soldiers in a horrific slaughter for a nonexistent military result.

1965 : Malcolm X Assassinated


On 21 February 1965, Malcolm X, an American civil rights activist, was assassinated in Manhattan by members of Nation of Islam, a political and religious organization to which he belonged.

1971 : Tornadoes in the Mississippi Delta


On February 21, 1971, tornadoes, including several F4, with winds sometimes exceeding 400 km/h, hit the Mississippi Delta, in the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Over 100 people were killed and nearly 1,000 seriously injured.

1972 : Richard Nixon visits China


On February 21, 1972, U.S. President Richard Nixon began a landmark visit to People's Republic of China to end 20 years of difficult relations between the US and China.
