1940 : Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar


On February 29, 1940, Hattie McDaniel won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy in the movie Gone with the Wind.
She was the first African-American actress to receive an Academy Award.
At the Cocoanut Grove of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles where the ceremony took place, McDaniel had to sit at a table separate from those of her colleagues: segregation and racism were still far from having disappeared from Hollywood.

1944 : General MacArthur invaded the Admiralty Islands


On February 29, 1940, General MacArthur invaded the Admiralty Islands in Papua New Guinea with 35,000 U.S. and Australian soldiers. It was the operation Brewer. The battles were fierce with Japanese forces, but the allies eventually got the victory on May 18, 1944.

1960 : Earthquake in Agadir


On 29 February 1960, an earthquake of moment magnitude 5.7 hit the city of Agadir in Morocco. Despite its low power, the earthquake killed 15,000 people and injured 12,000 others because of its proximity to this great city and the type of the buildings.

1996 : Plane crashes in the Andes


On February 29, 1996, Faucett Flight 251 crashed during a landing in Arequipa, Peru. The 123 passengers and crew were killed. The cause of the accident was a controlled flight into terrain caused by a problem in the barometric altimeter accentuated by near-zero visibility conditions.

International Day of awareness on rare diseases
February 29 is International Day of awareness of rare diseases.
There are nearly 8,000 rare diseases concerning humans in the world. Most are genetic and have no effective treatment because of the cost of research compared to the number of people affected by each disease, even though large projects, both public and private, have emerged.
