On 2 March 1917, Tsar Nicolas II of Russia abdicated under pressure from the people and the Bolsheviks, after 300 years of rule by the Romanov dynasty.

1965 : Operation Rolling Thunder

On 2 March 1965, Operation Rolling Thunder, a campaign of aerial bombing of the U.S. Army and South Vietnamese forces against North Vietnam, began with the striking of an ammunition depot at Xom Bang. The operation ended on November 1st 1968 and was a complete failure.

1972 : Pioneer 10 launched from Cape Canaveral

On 2 March 1972, the Pioneer 10 space probe was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida with a mission to explore the asteroid belt around Jupiter and the outer solar system. The probe completed its mission and communication with it was lost in 2003.

2004 : Ashoura Massacre in Iraq

On March 2, 2004, terrorists of al-Qaeda launched a series of bombings targeting Shi'ites who commemorated the Day of Ashura in Iraq. 178 people were killed and 500 injured.

2008 : Dmitry Medvedev elected President of the Russian Federation

On March 2, 2008, Dmitry Medvedev is elected President of the Russian Federation. He announced that he would work in tandem with his predecessor Vladimir Putin who became Prime Minister.
