1666 : Great Fire of London


On September 2, 1666, the house of King Charles II of England's baker burned completely. The baker did not extinguish his oven properly before going to bed, the night before. The fire spread to the entire city. At that time, most of the houses of London were made of wood and many warehouses along the Thames were full of flammable materials. 80% of the city were destroyed. St Paul's Cathedral went up in smoke. 100,000 people were left homeless.

1945 : Japan formally surrendered to the Allies


On September 2, 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allies on the USS Missouri, ending the Second World War. The Instrument of Surrender was signed by the supreme commander of Allied forces in the Pacific, General MacArthur, the Japanese foreign minister, Mamoru Shigemitsu, the representative of the Japanese armed forces, General Yoshijiro Umezu and various representatives of the Allies with interests in the Pacific : USA (represented by Admiral Nimitz), United Kingdom, France (represented by General Leclerc), China, Soviet Union, New Zealand, Netherlands, Australia and Canada.

1945 : Proclamation of Independence of Vietnam


On September 2, 1945, hours after the official surrender of Japan, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam against France, in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Hanoi. The French occupied southern Vietnam and opened negotiations with North Vietnam representatives. Negotiations were well under way when French generals, among whom Valluy and Argenlieu, decided on a coup by bombing the port of Haiphong, on November 28, 1946.

1973 : Death of J.R.R. Tolkien


On September 2, 1973, the English writer J.R.R. Tolkien died at the age of 81. His novels The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are part of world culture. Lord of the Rings was made ​​into a film by director Peter Jackson from New Zealand with Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler and Dominic Monaghan in the lead roles.
