1690 : Battle of the Boyne


On July 12, 1690, the Catholic Jacques II was defeated by the Protestant William of Orange at the Battle of the Boyne, near Drogheda in Ireland, which determined which one would get the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland.

1790 : Civil Constitution of the Clergy


On July 12, 1790, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Civil Constitution of the clergy. This law reformed profoundly the clergy who was separated from the Pope, was elected by voters and members of the clergy. Each member had to to take the oath to the State which henceforth pay him.

1892 : The collapse of a glacier destroyed the resort of Saint Gervais


On July 12, 1892, the Tete Rousse glacier broke due to accumulation of water and a mudslide hurtled down the slope to the spa resort of Saint Gervais which was destroyed. Over 200 people were killed.

1906 : Rehabilitation of Dreyfus


On July 12, 1906, Dreyfus was rehabilitated by the Supreme Court that canceled all judgments rendered against him, due to non-existent charges. The goal was to finish the Dreyfus Affair which had became highly political. But nothing was done to compensate the French Officer or to fight against the very violent anti-Semitism, exacerbated by the extreme right during the case.

1998 : France became world champion


On July 12th 1998, the French Football Team became world champion by defeating Brazil 3-0 at the Stade de France in Saint Denis.

2008 : Angelina Jolie gave birth to twins


On July 12, 2008, Angelina Jolie gave birth to twins called Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon at the Lenval hospital in Nice. The star and her partner Brad Pitt were already parents of four children, three adopted children (Maddox, Pax and Zahara) and one biological child (Shiloh). The couple sold the exclusive coverage of the event to the magazine People for $ 14 million which were donated to a charity.
