1066 : Battle of Hastings On October 14, 1066, King Harold II of England was defeated and killed by the Norman troops of the Duke of Normandy, William the Conqueror near the town of Hastings. William the Conqueror had arrived two weeks earlier with 7000 men to claim the English throne. He became the first Norman king of England on December 25, 1066.
1943 : Uprising in the Sobibor extermination camp On October 14, 1943, 600 prisoners of the Sobibor extermination camp in Poland revolted against their Nazi guards and half of them managed to escape to the forest nearby. Only 50 to 70 of them survived until the end of the war. Following the uprising, the camp, where 250,000 Jews and Soviet POWs were gassed, was razed.
1944 : Rommel is asked to commit suicide On October 14, 1944, Marshal Erwin Rommel, also known as the Desert Fox because of his successes in North Africa, was asked to commit suicide if he wanted to avoid a trial for treason because of the contacts he had with the plotters of the attack against Hitler. This magnanimity was granted because of his actions during the war and his immense popularity. He had thus a state funeral and everyone thought he had died of the wounds he received when his vehicle was bombed by the British.
1964 : Martin Luther King wins Nobel Peace Prize On October 14, 1964, African American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle against racial prejudice in the United States. He was only 35 years. Its peaceful marches and calls for civil disobedience made him win popular and political successes and helped to change laws.
