64 : Fire in Rome


On July 18, 64, a fire broke out in Rome and had continued for one week during which two-thirds of the city were destroyed.
Legend said it was the Emperor Nero that has triggered the fire in order to rebuild the city in a more Greek style. However, according to some accounts, this would not be accurate. On July 18, 1969 at Chappaquiddick Island near the island of Martha's Vineyard in Edgartown, Massachusetts, Senator Ted Kennedy, who had taken over the family torch after the assassination of his brother Bobby, left a party with Mary Jo Kopechne a young woman who had worked in the presidential campaign of 1968, driving an Oldsmobile. Senator missed the ramp to a small wooden bridge and fell into the water. He managed to leave the water but the young woman could not be found. Senator called friends for help but none of them found Kopechne. Kennedy swam to his hotel and called the police only 10 hours later.
Even with its political support, Kennedy was sentenced to 2 months suspended sentence. The accident cost him the Democratic nomination in 1972.

1984 : 21 people killed in a McDonald's restaurant


On July 18, 1984, an unemployed weapons lover entered into a McDonald's restaurant in Southern California with automatic weapons and fired on employees and customers. 20 people were killed and 19 injured. The madman was killed by a SWAT sharpshooter.

1998 : Tidal wave in Papua New Guinea


July 18, 1998, a 7m tidal wave striked the coast of Papua New Guinea and destroyed entire fishing villages. 3000 people were killed.

2007 : Plane crash in Sao Paulo


On July 18, 2007, a plane crashed on a fuel depot in Sao Paulo. None of the 186 passengers and crew survived and 14 people on the ground were killed.
