1620 : Pilgrims of the Mayflower went ashore at Plymouth harbor


On 18 December 1620, the Pilgrims of the Mayflower, originally from Nottinghamshire, arrive in a natural harbor of Cape Cod Bay.
They left on September 6, 1620 to found a new world and after a hard journey and having located a suitable place to go ashore, could finally leave the ship and found their first settlement.

1914 : Egypt came under British control


On December 18, 1914, Egypt came under the control of the English. The country was formerly under Turkish sovereignty.

1916 : End of the Battle of Verdun


After 10 months of a battle that claimed nearly a million French and German soldiers, the battle of Verdun ended December 18, 1916.

1978 : Cleveland went bankrupt


On December 18, 1978, the city of Cleveland, Ohio, was declared bankrupt. 10,000 city employees were laid off.

2009 : Arbeit Macht Frei stolen


On December 18, 2009, the sign Arbeit Macht Frei (work makes free) was stolen from the site of Auschwitz in Poland. The Nazis had placed it on the entrance gate of the extermination camp, to suggest that it was a labor camp, even if the people who came just to get out in the form of ashes were not likely to think that this could be the case. The sign was found the next day, cut into three pieces.
