1947 : Lord Mountbatten

On 20 February 1947, Lord Mountbatten was appointed viceroy of India to oversee the independence and partition of India between India and Pakistan. He was then appointed the first governor general of independent India, because of the good relations that he - and his wife - had with Nehru.

1962 : Friendship 7

On 20 February 1962, the spacecraft Friendship 7, from the Mercury program, piloted by John Glenn was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida. This is the first spacecraft to make the complete rotation of the earth in orbit.

1986 : Station Mir

On February 20, 1986, the first module of the Mir station, the largest space station in the world, is launched by a Proton rocket in Baikonur.

2003 : Fire in a Rhode Island nightclub

On 20 February 2003, a fire broke out at a concert in a Rhode Island nightclub. One of pyrotechnic devices used for the concert ignited the foam soundproofing on the ceiling. 100 people were killed and 200 others were seriously injured.
