1915 : Beginning of the Armenian Genocide


On 24 April 1915, the Minister of Interior arrested 250 Armenian intellectuals and personalities in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople, before they were executed. This was the beginning of the Armenian genocide which led to the death of 1.2 million people.

1916 : Easter uprising


On 24 April 1916, the uprising of Irish republicans took control of parts of Dublin in order to gain independence for Ireland against the British government. British forces retook control 6 days later, executed the movement's leaders.
The next election was won by the Republicans and the country's independence was declared in 1919 and recognized by the British in 1921.

1970 : Dong Fang Hong I


On April 24, 1970, China launched its first satellite, Dong Fang Hong I

1980 : Deepening crisis of American hostages in Iran


On April 24, 1980, Operation Eagle Claw, the rescue mission of the 52 hostages held in the U.S. embassy in Iran ended in failure. 8 American agents were killed. The members of the embassy taken into hostage by Iranian revolutionaries on November 4, 1979 were not released until January 20, 1981 after the signing of the Algiers Accords between the two countries.

1990 : Launch of Hubble Telescope


On April 24, 1990, the Space Shuttle Discovery placed the Hubble Space Telescope in orbit. Despite some problems of deployment of its mirrors in the beginning, Hubble was able to send pictures from outer space thereby revolutionizing our knowledge of our universe.

1993 : Bishopsgate bombing


On April 24, 1993, a truck exploded in the Bishopsgate district in London, killing one person and injuring dozens more. The damage was huge. The attack was attributed to the IRA.

2008 : Wesley Snipes sentenced to 3 years in prison


On April 24, 2008, the international star Wesley Snipes was sentenced to 3 years in prison for tax fraud and false statements by a Florida court. The sentence was upheld on appeal and the actor was arrested in late 2010.
