MUSEUM ISLAND - Museumsinsel

The historic center of the German capital meets the highest concentration of museums in Europe. 5 museums located at the north end of Spreeinsel (island located on the Spree River) gather more than a century of artistic creations. Lustgarten park and the Cathedral of Berlin placed in the center of this small island with a wide panorama to discover from the top, are the other island’s two attractions.

DAHLEM MUSEUM COMPLEX

This unique international complex hosts in one place art collections of non-European civilizations (Indian Art, Asian, East End, pre-Columbian America, Oceania…) The ethnographic collection contains more than 500,000 works and objects, photographs, films and sound recordings are regularly supplemented by research trips.

EAST SIDE GALLERY

The largest open skies permanent gallery of the world extends over a stretch length of 3937 feet (1216 m) of the Berlin Wall. This section of the wall still standing is used to support more than one hundred paintings on the east side of the wall by artists of all nationalities.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

The most famous border crossing between GDR and FRG at the time of the Cold War, the original hut is now visible at the Allied Museum (Museum Allierten) complex in Dahlem. The Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie houses and tells the history of the construction of the Berlin Wall and has a comprehensive documentation on escape attempts from East to West.

ALEXANDERPLATZ

Among the outstanding monuments in this square : the television tower 1197 ft (365m) tall, tallest building in Berlin topped by a rotating bulb with panoramic terrace, the « Brunnen der Völkerfreundschaft » (Fountain of Friendship between Peoples) and structure of the world clock erected in 1969.

GENDARMENMARKT

The architectural complex consists of two German and French cathedrals (Deutscher und Französicher Dom) and the konzerthaus concert hall in Schinkel, an architectural from that is the hallmark of this vibrant place.

SOPHIENSTRASSE

This small typical street hosts traditional habitat of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Behind the facades decorated with stucco are discovered courtyards of brick. BRANDEBOURG’S DOOR

Reserved for the passage of the German Emperors, this door is built in neoclassical style within the former Berlin Wall is the only survivor of the 14 doors of the city. Ancient symbol of the division of the two German now symbolize their reunification.
