Information on the cities of Côte d'Azur Montauroux - Tourism Var Côte d'Azur
Presentation

Montauroux is a pretty village in the Var, nestled on a hill, 364 meters above sea level. This village which had been a stronghold for centuries, is best known for being the site of the Battle of Montauroux between the armies of Henry IV and of the Duke of Savoy in 1592. From this time, Montauroux retained its narrow streets, fresh in summer. The bell tower of the town hall, dating from 1878 is interesting to see, as well as the wash-house which is bellow the tourist office and the many fountains hidden around the village.

History :

At the time of the Roman Empire, it was set out to capture the Neisson spring water to supply the town of Frejus and its port. An aqueduct was then built, which allowed to supply Fréjus for centuries. In the fifth century, it was destroyed during the invasions.

In the Middle Ages, Montauroux was supplied in water through the three sources of the village : Surban, Fontvieille and Barri. However, it was necessary to maintain these sources to make sure they could provide continuous water. Therefore, throughout the seventeenth century, fountains and a canal were built. At the end of the nineteenth century, the canal was covered for safety and hygiene.

There are now eight fountains in the heart of the village and others nearby. Some newer than others were built in the 2000s like Street Bonnet Fountain in 2005, the fountain cascading at the corner of Barrie street and the fountain street also in 2005, and the basin fountain built in 2006 on the Clos square.

To see :

Montauroux Heritage is rich with its long history. At the heart of the old town, you can admire the Church of St. Bartholomew dating from the twelfth century and numerous fountains, wash houses and pretty streets. A little further, is the small chapel of St. Bartholomew bequeathed to the village by Christian Dior in 1953.

For lovers of nature, Montauroux is only 5 km from the Lake St. Cassian and its many outdoor activities. The magnificent gorges of the Upper
Siagne
, a paradise of green tourism, are close to the town and offer many recreational opportunities. While in Montauroux, come and visit the amazing bamboo garden "The Bamboos of the Mandarin" : the scenery is guaranteed!
