Presentation

Sanary-sur-Mer is a small seaside resort of Var, appreciated all year round by tourists for its relaxed lifestyle and very traditional look. Between Marseille and Toulon, Sanary is an old fishing charming port.

Stroll through its pedestrian streets and you will discover the secrets of Sanary: facades covered with mosaics rich in color, small local shops, shady squares and refreshing fountains, always with the smell of the sea port where fishing boats shelter from the Mistral.

Histoy

The name "Sanary" comes from the Provence name of Saint-Nazaire (San Nari), a 1st century Roman martyr to whom a chapel was dedicated in the Middle Ages, built on the territory of present Sanary-sur-Mer.

The hamlet built around its Romanesque tower dating from the thirteenth century, grew faster from the XVI century and gained its independence vis-à-vis Ollioules in 1688.

Between 1865 and 1871, the mayor Michel Pacha (real name Jean Marius Michel) encouraged the development of the town by letting build many infrastructure to accommodate tourists. In November 1890, Sanary officially took the name "Sanary-sur-Mer."

The twentieth century was a difficult period for Sanary. The city hosted the 1933 German and Austrian refugees , great intellectuals forced to flee their countries, among them Alma Mahler, Thomas Mann, Franz Hessel and Arnold Zweig. Later, it suffered numerous bombings but its exemplary conduct earned it a citation and was awarded the 1939-1945 Military Cross.

During the reconstruction, it was more positive for the city because since that time, Sanary has only grown, even enjoying some unexpected contributions, like the one given by Chanoine Galli, who donated the building "The City of Youth", since transformed into a theater.
