1973 : Coup in ChileOn 11 September 1973, a military coup led by Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. Allende committed suicide. Thousands of people were taken to the National Stadium where they were tortured and many of them killed . Pinochet established a dictatorship, supported by the CIA, which lasted for 17 years. |

2001 : Attacks against United StatesOn September 11, 2001, four planes hijacked by 19 terrorists mostly from Saudi Arabia. At 8:46, a Boeing 767 crashed into the North Tower of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, between 80th and 110th floor. It collapsed at 10:28. At 9:03, a second Boeing 767 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center, between 77th and 85th floor. It collapsed at 9:59. Buildings WTC 3 (Marriott Hotel) and WTC 7 were destroyed when the two towers collapsed. Several nearby buildings were severely damaged. At 9:45, a Boeing 757 crashed into the Pentagon in Washington. A portion of the building collapsed, but because of the unique architecture of the Pentagon, built in during the second World War to withstand strong attacks, other sections were spared. At 10:03, a Boeing 757, hijacked to destroy an unidentified target, but that could have been the White House or the Congress, crashed in a rural area in Pennsylvania, after passengers had attacked the hijackers . There were 2977 victims in the attacks : 2606 in the World Trade Center, 125 in the Pentagon and 246 in the hijacked planes. Among the victims of the World Trade Center, there were 343 firefighters. |
