1588 : The Invincible Armada left Lisbon


On May 19, 1588, the Invincible Armada, Spanish fleet of 130 ships and 30,000 men, set sail from Lisbon to the Netherlands in order to invade England to take control of the English Channel. The Armada never reached the English coast : it was largely destroyed by outnumbered British forces and had to sail back to Spain.

1935 : Death of Lawrence of Arabia


On May 19, 1935, TE Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, died from a motorcycle accident.
He became famous as the liaison officer of the British army in the Arab army in rebellion against the Turkish occupying forces during the war between the Ottoman Empire and England.

1962 : Rendition of Happy Birthday by Marilyn Monroe


On May 19, 1962, Marilyn Monroe interprets Happy Birthday for President Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in New York at a charity event, 10 days before the actual birthday of the president.
The flesh colored dress, sewn on the star, worn that night , was sold to 1.26 million at an auction in 1999.

1974 : Election of Valery Giscard d'Estaing


On May 19 1974, Valery Giscard d'Estaing was elected President of the French Republic with 50.81% of the vote, defeating Francois Mitterrand.

1986 : SADF Raids


On May 19, 1986, Troops of the South African Defence Force launched raids against anti-apartheid bases of ANC in Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, countries constituting the bases of the struggle against the South African government. Nevertheless, sanctions of the international community becoming stronger, the South African government had to abandon its apartheid regime in the early 90s.
