1902 : Pierre and Marie Curie isolate radium


On April 20, 1902, Pierre and Marie Curie isolated radioactive radium extracted from uranium ore in theirlaboratory in Paris.
For this discovery, with Henri Becquerel, they win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903.
Radioactivity, radiation caused by atomic disintegration, was the main subject of study for Marie Curie for the rest of her life.

1914 : Ludlow massacre


On April 20, 1914, 19 people, men, women and children were killed when the National Guard attacked striking miners and their families in Ludlow, Colorado. The strike had begun six months earlier against working conditions. The massacre left ruins in the camp of the miners who attacked and destroyed a number of mines in the following days. The conflict ended when federal troops came to disarm the two camps.

1978 : A Korean flight forced to land by the Soviet Union


On April 20, 1978, the Soviet Union shot on a Korean commercial flight that had diverted from its route and entered Soviet airspace. The jet made an emergency landing on a frozen lake.

1999 : Columbine High School massacre


On April 20, 1999, two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shooted automatic weapons and threw homemade bombs at Columbine High School in Denver, Colorado. 13 people were killed and 24 wounded before the shooters kill themselves.
This massacre opened the debate on gun control, gun violence among young people and violent video games. It also inspired other troubled teens who commited similar killings in the world.

2010 : Deepwater Horizon explosion


On 20 April 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform, managed by BP, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana, killing 11 workers. The ensuing oil spill was the largest in history and caused an unprecedented ecological disaster. The local economy was devastated. Large quantities of hazardous chemicals were used to try to limit the spread of oil. The leak was not plugged until 19 September.
