1935 : End of the Long March of Mao


On October 20, 1935, Mao Zedong arrived in the Shensi Province, in north western China with 4,000 survivors and after 368 days of walking. They had fled the siege by nationalist more than a year earlier.

1944 : The Americans landed on the island of Leyte in the Philippines


On October 20, 1944, 100,000 American troops landed on the island of Leyte in the Philippines to prepare for the invasion of General MacArthur in the country. The battles on the island of Leyte were among the bloodiest of the war. The Battle in the Leyte Gulf, with the largest fleet that Japan assembled during the war, was extremely difficult but marked the beginning of the end for the Japanese army.

1973 : Opening of the Sydney Opera House


On October 20, 1973, the Sydney Opera House, designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon was inaugurated. Its specific form makes it the symbol of the city. Today, 3000 events are presented each year in its various theater, concert or opera houses.

1976 : Ferry accident on the Mississippi River


On October 20, 1976, the MV George Prince ferry was struck by a Norwegian tanker and sank while it was crossing the Mississippi River in Louisiana. 78 people were killed. 7 years later, the crossing could be done through a bridge to be more than 3 km long, the Luling Bridge.
