1927 : Earthquake in ChinaOn 22 May 1937, an earthquake of moment magnitude 9.7 hit the region of Xining in the center of China. This was one of the deadliest in history: 200,000 people were killed. Xining region is a zone of convergence between Indian and Eurasian plates. |

1960 : Earthquake in ChileOn 22 May 1960, an earthquake of moment magnitude 9.5 hit the region of Valdivia, Chile. Another earthquake of magnitude 7.9 had occurred the previous day in another province of southern Chile. The whole area of Valdivia was destroyed by the earthquake and the tsunami that follows. Waves up to 25 m high destroyed several villages. The coast of Chile was changed, volcanoes were waking ... The death toll reached more than 3,000 deaths including in Japan and Hawaii where waves up to 10 m ravaged the coasts. |
