Located between Nice and Monaco, the town of Villefranche-sur-Mer contains many treasures that we invite you to explore on a sunny day trip out.
A medieval town centre
Many of the villages and towns of the Côte d’Azur are best explored on foot, and in Villefranche-sur-Mer this is particularly the case as it is not an easy town to drive around in.
You can park your vehicle in one of the car parks near to the Old-Villefranche, and from there, make your way to the Baroque Church of Saint-Michel which is worth visiting as it boasts some of the oldest Frères Grinda organs in the Alpes-Maritimes. They have been classified as Historical Monuments of France.
Next, walk along the intriguing medieval Rue Obscure before heading to the port to visit the Chapel of Saint-Pierre, dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen, and decorated by Jean Cocteau.
Art and History on the waterfront
One of the town’s greatest treasures is its 16th century citadel, which has also been classified as a Historical Monument of France. Nowadays, the rough open stone of the casements of this fortified stronghold house the Volti Museum, which boasts collections of bronze, copper and clay female statues.
In addition, from the citadel, you can take the chemin de ronde which links the Old Town with De la Darse Port. Alternatively, starting from where the citadel overlooks the sea, a short walk brings you to the old port of the Ducs de Savoie.
Here you will discover a pretty pleasure port and a collection of 18th century buildings that include a rope-makers, a blacksmiths, an old hospital, the Lazaret Tower and some ramparts behind which you will find a beach.
